Sheep transaction levy

This levy is collected under the Australian Meat and Livestock Act 1997.

The Australian Government also contributes a dollar for each dollar MLA spends in R&D. Components of the levy are used to fund research, development and marketing activities through the red meat industry services body Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), programs conducted by Animal Health Australia (AHA), plus contributions to the National Residue Survey.

The legislation stipulates that the transaction levy shall be collected at an ad valorem rate of 2% for both adult sheep and lambs.

For lambs, the levy shall not exceed the value of $1.50 and shall not be applicable for lambs valued at less than $5.

For adult sheep, the levy shall not exceed the value of $0.20 and shall not be applicable for adult sheep valued at less than $5.
